This exciting and intense horse race is the pride of Siena, and began around 1656. Tradition prevails, as racers from the Contradas of Siena (the original districts of the city) vie for coveted titles. Many of the celebrations associated with the Palio are elaborate and colourful, including a historic procession with costumed paraders. The race is held at the Piazza del Campo.
