Pistoia Castles & Stately Homes
• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide to Castles & Stately Homes in Pistoia, PT, Tuscany.
The facade of Pistoia's Duomo is described as Pisan-Romanesque, and is fairly unadorned except for a lunette created by Andrea dell Robbia of the Madonna and Child. Robbia also designed the teracotta tiles that cover some of the floor, specifically those of the barrel vault.
While undergoing restorations, several priceless artifacts were discovered on the grounds of the Antico Palazzo dei Vescovi, some dating as far back as Etruscan times. The number of pieces on display today is staggering, and sure to inspire the imagination.
Between Fiesole and Pistoia, this Medici hideaway is decorated in much the same manner as when it was a residence of the royal Savoys, with intricate frescoes and delicate furniture around every corner. Its surrounding gardens are maintained with great care, and are also worth a wander.
